The early weeks following birth receive significant attention from maternity and healthcare professionals. But maternal needs do not remain the same once the newborn period has passed.
By six months, a mother may be navigating changes in feeding, sleep, work, childcare, family routines and her own confidence. The support that was appropriate immediately after birth may therefore be different from what she needs several months later.
Drawing on insights from registered midwife and infant sleep consultant Bianca Burge, this article considers the importance of recognising these transitions and viewing maternal support as an evolving continuum rather than something concentrated only around pregnancy, birth and the early postnatal period.
